We installed a 52 panel solar PV system at the London School of Economics (LSE) as part of their £125M Centre Buildings Redevelopment (CBR) in early 2019.


The CBR is LSE’s largest ever redevelopment, situated at the heart of LSE’s campus, on Houghton Street and Clare Market. The 13-storey building is the largest building commissioned in LSE’s history. A bold and beautiful design, it is also the highest building on campus, offering spectacular views across London’s skyline. The redevelopment involved construction of connected 13-storey (PV installed on this building) and six-storey towers housing lecture theatres, study areas, staff offices, a café/learning area and a series of landscaped roof terraces. Architect Roger Stirk Harbour + Partners designed the building to score an “outstanding” BREEAM rating (88.9%) through a variety of measures to which the solar PV contributes.

 

The equipment included 52 Sunpower 327Wp solar panels, a Solis 15kW inverter and mounting system.

 

The challenge for this project was to install using a non-penetrative mounting system. We worked with the mounting company who calculated the required ballast loadings for the system for this particular site location and height, to ensure the system would withstand potential snow and very importantly wind loadings.
