If you’re warming up to the idea of an air source heat pump, but wondering how much maintenance it will need, then the good news is they require very little maintenance. However, it’s still important that you conduct regular checks to help keep your system running efficiently and extend the lifespan of your heat pump to keep it lasting for decades.

Here are our top five tips for maintaining your heat pump.

1. When it comes to maintaining your heat pump, the best time to run any maintenance checks is during the summer months to ensure your system runs effectively before the colder weather hits.

Keep it clear and unblocked – Your air pump works by extracting heat from the air around it, so it’s essential that it has an unobstructed air flow around and through it otherwise the performance of your heating system will be reduced.  We advise keeping your heat pump clear of obstructions, which includes not leaning bikes or anything up against it and removing any obstructions and debris from the evaporator and fan outlet that could restrict airflow.

2. Top up the antifreeze – Stay on top of refilling the antifreeze as this helps prevent the unit from freezing over winter. It’s one of those little tasks that could make a big difference in preventing your heat pump from breaking down.

3. Review the water pressure – Just like a gas boiler you’ll need to check the water pressure of your heat pump when the system in cold and not in operation. Depending on the size of your property, this could range from 0.7 bar to 1.2 bar. We’ll let you know what the right pressure is for your home when we install it.

4. Book an annual maintenance appointment – Just like a gas boiler, a heat pump needs an annual service to keep it in tip-top shape.  Our service package offers an annual service by one of our qualified local Plug Me In technicians and involves cleaning and checks to ensure optimal performance and give you peace of mind that your system is in good working order.

5. Our package also offers access to our 24/7 contact centre and a rapid call out should you need it, as well as comprehensive 5-7 year warranty on your heat pump, cylinder and any new radiators that we install.
