We look at the several reasons why EVs are more environmentally friendly.

Are electric vehicles actually better for the planet?

You’re not alone if this is a question you’ve been researching and deliberating. The environmental impact of an electric vehicle (EV) compared to a traditional petrol or diesel car does very much depend on how the electricity used to charge them is generated, the manufacturing process and the vehicle’s lifespan, but the reality is that an EV has about half the climate impact of an average car or van.

There are several reasons why EVs are more environmentally friendly, including:

  • Reduced emissions: EVs produce no tailpipe emissions contributing to lower air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, especially in areas where electricity comes from low-carbon or renewable sources.

  • Enhanced energy efficiency: Electric motors are generally more efficient than internal combustion engines, which results in more effective energy utilisation and lower overall energy consumption.

  • Battery technology advancements: Ongoing improvements in battery technology means the environmental impact of manufacturing and disposing of batteries is being reduced and recycling programmes for batteries which are being developed, are also minimising their environmental impact.

No one is claiming EVs are the perfect solution, but they will go a long way to reducing our carbon footprint on the planet. And, as the electricity grid becomes greener and battery technology advances, the overall environmental benefits of EVs are likely to increase further.
